美 주요 매체들 'V30' 멀티미디어 성능 및 디자인 호평.. "경쟁구도 변화 일으킬 것"

LG전자의 차기 전략 스마트폰 'LG V30'가 전 세계 주요 언론들로부터 호평받고 있다.

미국 IT전문매체 '더 버지'는 V30에 대해 "다른 스마트폰에서는 볼 수 없는 아름다움을 갖췄다"고 평가했고, 미국 매체 '씨넷'은 "V30의 디자인은 날렵하고 매끄럽다. LG는 올해 스마트폰 디자인의 큰 획을 그었다"고 보도했다.

LG전자는 지난달 31일 'IFA(국제가전전시회) 2017' 개막에 앞서 독일 베를린에서 V30를 공개했다. V30는 대화면 스마트폰 중 가장 얇고 가벼운 디자인과 강력한 멀티미디어 성능으로 전 세계의 이목을 집중시켰다.

미국 IT 매체 '매셔블'은 "V30가 너무 가벼워 안에 부품이나 배터리가 들어가 있는 것인지 의심이 들어 후면 글래스를 톡톡 쳐보게 된다"며 V30의 디자인을 높이 평가했다. CNBC는 V30가 시장의 요구를 정확하게 파악했다면서 "훌륭한 스펙들을 탑재했을 뿐 아니라, 소비자의 목소리를 확실히 듣고 이해해 그들이 원하는 모든 것을 담아냈다"고 보도했다.

강력한 카메라 기능에 대한 긍정적인 평가도 이어졌다. 미국 IT 매체 '안드로이드 오쏘리티'는 "사진 촬영 기능을 완전히 새로운 수준으로 격상시켰다"고 보도했다. 미국 IT 매체 '엔가젯'은 비디오 기능에 대해 "영화감독이 아닌 일반인들도 수준 높은 영화 같은 영상을 너무나 쉽게 만들 수 있다"고 극찬했다. 이어 "역대 최고의 스마트폰을 만들어 낸 게 확실하다"며 "V30는 스마트폰 시장의 경쟁구도에 변화를 일으킬 것"이라고 내다봤다.

[IFA 2017] LG unveils camera, sound-centric V30 smartphone

BERLIN -- Hoping to reaffirm its presence in the global smartphone world, South Korea‘s tech giant LG Electronics chose Berlin to unveil its newest flagship smartphone with enhanced multimedia experience.

On Thursday, the Korean handset manufacturer came up with the newest flagship V30 smartphone focused on quality of entertainment with enhanced camera and audio features to be unveiled to around 700 tech maniacs and media officials from around the world, who are visiting the city to attend the IFA, the biggest tech show in Europe, starting Friday.

In February, LG had announced its premium flagship smartphone G6 ahead of the Mobile World Congress, another major tech show, held in Barcelona, Spain, with the same objective. But, the G6 smartphone has fallen short of handset lovers’ expectations. 

The latest V series model, equipped with Korean-language version of Google Assistant, features the industry’s first F1.6 aperture and Crystal Clear Lens in the dual lens camera, OLED Full Vision display and Hi-Fi Quad digital-to-analog converter (DAC).

Of the new features, the camera stands out the most as the industry’s first attempt to offer smartphone videography. 

V30’s dual camera is powered with an F1.6 camera with a glass lens that lets in more lights to produce brighter and dynamic shots. 

Another newly adopted Cine Video mode allows users to take movie-like videos on the V30 smartphone. 

The Crystal Clear Lens delivers more accurate colors and clearer images than plastic lens that are used in other smartphones.

The second lens in the V30 dual camera is an upgraded 13MP wide angle lens with two-thirds less edge distortion than in V20. 

With a 6-inch 18:9 OLED FullVision display, the V30 is 8 millimeters shorter and 3 millimeters narrower than the predecessor, resulting in a firmer grip. It is 7.3 millimeters thick and weighs 158 grams.

According to the company, the V30 is the lightest among 6-inch smartphones. 

The latest LG smartphone tries to offer users optimal multimedia experience with sound backed by a Hi-Fi Quad DAC and audio tuning by Bang & Olufsen PLAY. 

The V30 is the first global smartphone to support MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) technology that allows for the streaming of high-resolution audio files that capture the sound of the original studio master and folds it into a small file to make high-resolution audio easy to stream. The V30’s recording capability is upgraded as well, with a receiver that doubles as a microphone to capture a broader sound spectrum, from gentle chimes to thunderous drums.

LG also introduced the first smartphone with a Korean language voice recognition service by Google. 

The Google Assistant on the V30 takes advantage of the smartphone’s advanced signal processing enabling users to use the voice command, “Ok Google” even when loud music is being played. 

In addition, LG appliances ranging from washing machine, dryer, refrigerator, air purifier, oven, air conditioner to robot vacuum are compatible with the Google Assistant when using the V30 and Google Home. 

Users can say, “Ok Google, talk to LG to wash my clothes,” to start a load of laundry.

“The V series has always been demonstrating new practical mobile technologies that contribute to high quality content creation and the V30 has not lost sight of its roots,” said Juno Cho, president of the mobile communications at LG. “With its F1.6 Crystal Clear Lens Camera and Cine Video mode, the LG V30 is designed to help create professional-looking content without professional-level complexity.” 

The V30 will be available to consumers in South Korea starting on Sept. 21 and will be followed by key markets in North America, Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. 

The 64-gigabyte V30 will come in four colors: Aurora Black, Cloud Silver, Moroccan Blue and Lavender Violet 2. 

The LG V30+ with 128GB of storage will be available in some limited markets.

Together with the newest V30 smartphones, LG will exhibit its premium lineups of home appliances, including the thinnest, wallpaper-like OLED TV W and SIGNATURE series led by the Knock-on Magic Space refrigerator, targeting European consumers and business partners at the company’s booth at Messe Berlin.

“단순미를 강조한 미니멀리즘 디자인 속에 최고 수준의 성능을 빈틈없이 담아낸 진정한 프리미엄 스마트폰입니다.” 조준호 LG전자 MC사업본부장(사장)이 31일(현지시간) 독일 베를린 시내의 호텔에서 하반기 전략 스마트폰 ‘V30’를 들어 보이며 이렇게 소개했다.

스마트폰 최초로 최고 밝기의 조리갯값 F1.6을 구현한 듀얼카메라, 영화 같은 영상을 찍을 수 있는 ‘시네 비디오’ 모드, 군더더기를 싹 걷어낸 디자인 등이 집약된 V30가 어떤 스마트폰에도 뒤지지 않을 것이라는 자신감의 표현이었다. 조 사장은 “V30와 함께하면 누구나 일상이 영화가 되는 즐거운 경험을 하게 될 것”이라고 강조했다.

LG전자가 ‘국제가전박람회(IFA) 2017’ 개막을 이틀 앞둔 31일 베를린에서 V30를 공개했다. V시리즈 세 번째 제품인 V30는 9분기째 스마트폰 사업 적자를 벗어나지 못하고 있는 LG전자 ‘최후의 보루’다.

LG전자는 V30(64GB)와 V30보다 저장 용량을 키운 V30플러스(128GB)를 다음달 21일 국내 출시한다. 출시일을 삼성전자 갤럭시노트8와 같은 날로 맞춰 정면대결을 선언했다. 앞서 LG전자는 연필을 부러뜨려 V자를 만든 뒤 ‘조금만 기다려, 뭐가 다른지 똑 부러지게 보여줄게’라는 문구를 띄우고, 노트에 ‘너와 헤어져야 할 이유가 생겼어’라고 쓴 다음 종이를 찢어버리는 내용의 V30 예고(티저) 영상 2편을 공개하며 갤럭시노트8를 직접 저격했다. 경쟁제품을 언급하는 일이 거의 없던 LG전자가 180도 달라진 모습을 보이며, 긴 부진을 끊어내고 반전을 만들겠다는 의지를 드러낸 것이다.

누구나 영화감독이 된다

뒷면에 달린 듀얼카메라는 V30의 자랑거리다. 일반각(71도)과 광각(120도) 두 개의 렌즈 중 일반각 렌즈는 스마트폰 최초로 F1.6의 조리갯값을 구현했다. 조리갯값은 1에 가깝게 낮아질수록 실제와 흡사한 빛을 받아들일 수 있어, 어두운 곳에서 촬영하거나 보다 선명하게 영상을 찍을 때 빛의 노출을 정확히 맞출 수 있다.

V30에 새롭게 추가된 시네 비디오는 다양한 장르영화의 느낌이 나게 영상을 찍을 수 있는 기능이다. 로맨틱 코미디, 멜로, 스릴러 등 15가지 장르 가운데 선택할 수 있고, 영상 가장자리만 어둡게 만드는 효과도 줄 수 있다. 화면 가운데를 기준으로 단순 확대 혹은 축소되는 다른 스마트폰 카메라와 달리 V30는 특정 지점을 지정해 그 지점을 기준으로 줌 인ㆍ아웃도 가능하다.

화면은 커지고 크기는 작아지고

V30는 화면이 커졌는데 크기는 줄었다. 상하좌우 테두리(베젤)를 최소화한 18대 9 화면비의 올레드 풀비전 디스플레이를 탑재해 화면(6인치)이 전작 V20보다 커졌지만 제품 크기는 오히려 작아졌다. 디자인은 더 단순하고 깔끔해졌다. LG 로고를 뒷면에 새겨 앞면에는 화면 외에 아무것도 남기지 않았다. 색상은 검은색, 은색, 파란색, 보라색 네 가지로 나온다.

외부 협력 통해 더 뛰어난 편의성

LG전자는 V30와 함께 덴마크 오디오 업체 뱅앤올룹슨(B&O) 플레이와 손잡고 만든 이어폰을 제공한다. 구글과 협력을 통해 V30에서 인공지능(AI) 비서 ‘구글 어시스턴트’ 한국어 서비스를 처음 선보인다. “로맨틱 영화처럼 찍어줘” 처럼 V30로만 이용할 수 있는 명령어도 추가했다. 간편결제 서비스 ‘LG페이’도 지원한다.

애플, 다음달 12일 '스티브 잡스 극장'서 아이폰8 공개?..갤노트8⋅V30과 진검승부

애플의 새 전략 스마트폰 ‘아이폰8(가칭)’이 다음달 12일 공개된다. 아이폰8은 지난 2007년 고(故) 스티브잡스 애플 창업자가 처음 선보인 아이폰 출시 10주년을 기념한 제품이다. 이 폰에는 유기발광다이오드(OLED) 등 혁신 기술을 탑재할 것으로 알려졌다.

아이폰8 공개 후 3일 후 삼성전자의 갤럭시노트8이 전 세계 출시된다. 또 31일 독일 가전박람회(IFA)에서는 LG전자가 V30을 공개하는 등 하반기 프리미엄폰 시장이 후끈 달아오를 예정이다.

특히 한국에서는 정부가 다음달 15일부터 추진한다는 선택약정 요금할인율 25% 제도가 변수가 될 전망이다. 단말기 보조금이 적은 애플 아이폰8의 경우 단말기를 구입한 뒤 선택약정에 가입하는 경우가 많기 때문에 할인율 상향은 애플 아이폰에 유리할 수 있기 때문이다.

◆ 아이폰8 vs 갤럭시노트8 vs V30…누가 웃을까

28일(현지시간) 월스트리트저널(WSJ), CNBC 등 외신에 따르면 애플은 다음달 12일 ‘아이폰 8’, ‘아이폰 7S’와 ‘애플워치’ ‘애플TV’ 등을 공개한다.

애플은 이번 아이폰8부터 처음으로 OLED 디스플레이를 탑재하고 홈버튼을 없앤 전면 풀 스크린 디자인, 강력한 성능의 신형 ‘A11’ 프로세서, 3차원(3D) 안면인식 기능 등을 적용할 것으로 예상된다. 아이폰8에 들어가는 OLED의 초기 물량은 삼성디스플레이가 공급하는 것으로 알려졌다. 현재 LG디스플레이도 중소형 OLED 생산시설을 구축하고 있는 만큼 일정 시간 이후에는 애플이 삼성과 LG 등 OLED 공급처를 다각화할 것 전망된다.

현재 북미 시장에서 아이폰8을 구입하겠다고 스마트폰 구입을 미루는 대기 수요만 2400만대에 달하는 것으로 알려졌다.

OLED 5.8인치 화면을 장착한 아이폰8은 아이폰7보다 크지만 아이폰7 플러스보다는 작은 크기가 될 것으로 알려졌다. 또 64기가바이트(GB), 256GB, 512GB 옵션으로 출시될 것이 유력하다.

이 밖에 아이폰8은 무선충전이 지원될 것이라는 얘기도 있다. 다만 무선충전에서 고속충전이 지원될지에 대해서는 회의적인 시선이 많다. 정보기술(IT)매체 애플인사이더는 아이폰8의 무선충전 지원이 15와트(W)가 아닌, 7.5와트일 가능성을 제기했다. 7.5와트면 충전속도가 충분히 빠르지 않다는 뜻이다. 나아가 후면 패널 소재가 알루미늄에서 글라스로 변경될 것이란 관측도 나오고 있다.

아이폰8에 대한 가격을 놓고는 의견이 분분하다. 일부 매체에서는 최고급 모델이 1300달러(약 146만원)에 달할 것이라는 전망을 내놨다. 또다른 매체에서는 아이폰8의 최대 가격이 999달러(약 112만원)가 될 것이라고 예측했다. 여기에 아이폰7s는 649달러(약 73만원), 아이폰7s 플러스는 769달러(약 86만원)가 될 전망이다.

삼성전자(005930)가 지난 23일 공개한 갤럭시노트8의 경쟁력도 만만치 않다. 갤럭시노트8는 사상 처음으로 듀얼 카메라를 장착했다. 덕분에 인물사진 촬영에 최적화된 ‘라이브 포커스’가 가능하다. 라이브 포커스는 배경을 흐리게 처리하면서 인물 표현은 뚜렷하게 하는 것이다.갤럭시노트8에는 광학적 영상 흔들림방지(OIS) 기능도 탑재돼 있다.

LG전자(066570)의 V30은 18대 9 화면비에 2880×1440 OLED 디스플레이를 제품 전면부에 꽉 채운 ‘올레드 풀비전’ 제품이다. OLED를 적용한 V시리즈 제품은 V30가 처음이다. 후면 듀얼 카메라의 표준렌즈에는 지금까지 공개된 스마트폰 카메라 중 최고 수준인 F1.6의 조리갯값을 구현했다. 오디오는 터치 한 번으로 선호하는 음색만을 골라 들을 수 있도록 한 ‘사운드 프리셋’ 기능을 적용했다.

◆ 애플, ‘스티브 잡스 극장’에서 아이폰 공개하나

외신들은 일제히 애플의 아이폰8 공개일을 9월 12일로 확정하는 기사를 쏟아내고 있다. 12일을 꼭찝어 얘기하는 배경에는 최근 몇 년간 아이폰 공개 시점을 분석해보면 알 수 있다. 통상 애플은 아이폰 공개를 9월 초·중순 화요일이나 수요일에 진행해왔다. 2016년 아이폰7은 9월 7일 수요일에 발표됐고 아이폰6S는 같은달 9일 수요일, 아이폰6는 9일 화요일, 5S는 10일 화요일에 발표됐다.

예상대로 9월 12일에 아이폰8이 나온다면 정식 출시일은 같은 주 금요일인 15일이나 그 다음주 금요일인 22일이 될 가능성이 크다. 물론 한국은 1차 출시국이 아닐 가능성은 높다. 보통 한국은 3차 출시국에 포함된다. 아이폰8도 10월~11월에 한국에 출시될 수 있다.

일각에서는 올해 아이폰 탄생 10주년을 기념해 아이폰을 공개하는 장소가 바뀔 수도 있다는 전망도 나오고 있다.

애플은 지난 2년 동안 신제품을 내놓을 때마다 미국 샌프란시스코의 ‘빌그레이엄 시민회관’을 이용했다. 하지만 이번에는 캘리포니아주 쿠퍼티노에 건설 중인 신사옥 애플파크의 대강당 ‘스티브잡스 극장’에서 이뤄진다는 소문이 무성하다. 스티브잡스 극장의 시설과 내부 모습이 외부에 공개된 적은 없다.

많은 외신들은 “스티브잡스를 기념하기 위해 만든 극장에서 아이폰8이 공개될 예정"이라며 “다만,신사옥 애플파크의 공사가 완료되지 않아 완공 일정에 따라 행사 장소나 시간이 변결될 수 있다"고 보도했다.

애플의 창업자 고 스티브 잡스의 이름을 딴 ‘스티브잡스 극장’은 사옥 부지 언덕 위에 자리한 1000석 규모의 대회의장이다. 애플이 신제품을 발표하거나 기자회견 등에 쓰기 위해 짓고 있다. 극장은 지하에 본회의장이 있고 지상에는 탄소섬유 지붕과 원통 모양의 유리벽으로 만들어진 로비가 있다.

총 1만2000명 직원이 일하게 될 애플파크에는 지난 4월부터 연구·개발 인력 2000명을 시작으로 직원들이 순차적으로 입주하고 있다.

Samsung unveils Galaxy Note 8 with smarter S Pen

Samsung Electronics launched its much-awaited flagship smartphone Galaxy Note 8, the first Note model after its predecessor Note 7 fiasco last year.

The Korean tech giant debuted its 6.3-inch Note 8 with smarter S Pen stylus, a bigger infinity display and a bolstered camera on Wednesday (local time) in New York. 

“From the infinity display to the enhanced S Pen and a powerful dual camera, the Galaxy Note8 lets people do things they never thought were possible," Koh Dong-jin, president of Samsung's mobile communications business, said at the launch of the Note 8 in New York.

Samsung said its Note 8’s enhanced S Pen stylus unlocks new ways to write, draw, and interact with the phone and communicate with friends with a finer tip and improved pressure sensitivity 3. Users can also handwrite a message, add special effects and share it as an animated GIF4 on several popular messaging and social apps. 

The Galaxy Note8 has the biggest screen ever on a Note device, yet its narrow body makes it comfortable to hold in one hand. The 6.3-inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED infinity display lets you see more and scroll less. 

The Always on Display allows Galaxy users to stay on top of their notifications without unlocking their phone, the firm said. Screen off memo allows users to take up to one-hundred pages of notes as soon as they remove the S Pen, pin notes to the Always on Display and make edits directly from the Always on Display.

For more advanced photo-taking, both rear cameras in dual capture mode, take two pictures simultaneously and allow you to save both images; one close-up shot from the telephoto lens and one wide-angle shot that shows the entire background.

The Note 8 will be available in stores starting Sept. 15 in 40 nations, including Korea, the US and the UK.

Details of Galaxy Note 8 leaked in Australia

Australia-based media Ausdroid reported Friday it has obtained marketing material for Samsung Electronics Co.'s presumed Galaxy Note 8, slated to be showcased next week.

Ausdroid said it obtained a sales brochure for the South Korean tech giant's upcoming phablet, originally slated to be revealed in New York on Wednesday, which included information on detailed specifications.

According to the report, the Galaxy Note 8 comes with a 6.3-inch QHD display and is equipped with IP68 standards for water and dust resistance. The size is slightly bigger than the 6.2-inch Galaxy S8 Plus released earlier.

As widely expected, the new phablet also comes with a dual-lens camera, marking the first time for the tech giant to apply the feature on its flagship models. 

It also supports Optical Image Stabilization, with the aperture standing at F1.7 -- the same for the Galaxy S8 models. A lower number in aperture indicates that a camera is capable of gathering more light, leading to more vivid photos and videos.

The new phablet also comes with its own pen like its previous Note smartphones. 

A Samsung Electronics official said it cannot confirm the report made by the Australian media, adding the company is looking into the details of the sales brochure.

iPhone 8 unlikely to have curved edge display: source

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 8 is unlikely to have a curved edge display despite rampant speculation that the new device may adopt the design with its organic light-emitting diode panels having a flexible nature. 

Since the Cupertino-based iPhone maker for the first time decided to use OLED panels for its new flagship smartphone, there has been speculation that the device may sport an edge display like Galaxy S8 offers. Samsung adopted the edge-to-edge display -- where two sides of the device are curved edges -- for all Galaxy S8 series despite some complaints from consumers who accidentally touch the edge screen.


“Apple is highly unlikely to follow the same design of its rival’s. Instead of the curved edge display, it will have a flat screen with bezel-less on the top and bottom alongside the two sides,” a source familiar with the matter told The Korea Herald.

As to why Apple adopted plastic OLED even though it will not make the device curved or with an edge, the source said, OLED can make the device thinner and lighter compared to liquid crystal display panels that Apple has long adopted for its former iPhone models. 

Apple will reportedly delay the release of iPhone 8 as it solely relies on its rival Samsung for OLED panels. Samsung Display, which is only capable of mass producing OLED panels for smartphones, is currently having a hard time to meet demand outstripping supply.

“Apple may unveil its iPhone 8 in September, but it is predicted to go on sale in October or November,” said Taipei-based KGI Securities analyst Ming-chi Kuo, who is famous for his iPhone-related predictions. 

Kuo said only about 2 million to 4 million units of iPhones will be available in the third quarter of this year due to the shortage issue. 

Apart from OLED panels, iPhone 8 is also predicted to sport several new features such as advanced facial recognition scanner and 3-D sensors supporting augmented reality applications. 

The new facial recognition scanner with 3-D sensors can deeply sense a user’s face in the millionths of a second. Also, 3-D sensors are said to be adopted for the front and rear of the device to realize AR applications, which integrate 3-D virtual images with user’s environment in real time.

Apple and Samsung tried to have an in-display fingerprint reader for their new phones, iPhone 8 and Galaxy Note 8, respectively but both of them appear to have failed to put the scanner under the display screen due to technical difficulties.

LG opens biggest overseas brand shop in Iraq

LG Electronics opened its largest overseas brand shop in Iraq as an investment in the emerging market of the Middle East, the company announced Wednesday. 

The South Korean electronics maker is eyeing the rising Iraqi market, where large reconstruction projects are underway, with an aim to establish its premium image in the home appliances market. 

The company opened the two-floor shop that spans 870 square meters in the main commercial district of Erbil, the fourth-largest city in Iraq.

Around 200 government and media officials attended an opening ceremony at the shop Tuesday. 

By covering the entire front wall of the shop with glass, LG hopes to capture the attention of passersby with an exhibition of its premium lineup of home appliances in the LG Signature experience zone. 

LG is also offering consumers free after-sales service. 

With the newest store in Iraq, LG currently runs a total of six brand shops in Iran, Lebanon, Jordan, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. 

“We plan to continue expanding the presence of LG shops and its premium image in the Middle East and African regions,” said Cha Guk-hwan, head of the regional office.

SEOUL, Aug. 14 (Yonhap) -- LG Electronics Inc. on Monday revealed features for the upcoming flagship V30, which lets users fully utilize the Full Vision display that minimizes bezels for a wider screen.

The company said the LG V30, slated to be showcased in Berlin, on Aug. 31, will come with a "Floating Bar" that displays the most used applications on the screen if users click on a small icon on the side.

Through its Always-On function, the smartphone will continuously display key information on the screen by using a minimum amount of power, helping users activate Bluetooth, WiFi, the camera and light, it added.

LG Electronics said the V30 will come with an improved camera with a F1.6 lens, which will be 25 percent brighter than the F1.8 lens adopted by its predecessor, the LG V20. A lower number in aperture indicates that a camera is capable of gathering more light, leading to more vivid photos and videos.

The tech giant added that it adopted the Crystal Clear Lens for the rear camera to provide users with optimized color.

The company said such glass-based material, usually applied to high-end digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras, will allow the V30 to capture more details of objects compared with other plastic-based lens.

As for security, the V30 is able to screen fingerprints and faces, LG said.

LG Electronics has been releasing various teasers of the V30 to grab potential users' attention, as the flagship device is anticipated to play a decisive role in revitalizing its earnings.

The company's handset business has been posting quarterly operating losses since the third quarter of 2015.

Its bigger local rival Samsung Electronics Co. also plans to release the presumed Galaxy Note 8 later this month.

LG V30 to be unlocked via any voice keywords

Say “Good Day” and your phone will automatically be unlocked. This will be one of the features of LG Electronics’ upcoming flagship smartphone V30, which will also offer an intuitive user experience and a professional camera mode.

With less than three weeks to go before LG debuts its new V30 in Berlin, the Korean tech giant has disclosed some of its new features.

LG said Monday that its V30 will allow users to unlock the device via voice commands using keywords, for instance “Good Day,” without the need to press a button or swipe the screen.

The customized keywords will make the device much safer and set itself apart from its rivals, the firm said. Samsung’s Galaxy, Apple’s iPhone and other Android-based smartphones only respond to “Hi Bixby,” “Hey Siri” and “Ok Google,” respectively. 

Furthermore, the V30’s upgraded facial recognition will make it easier to unlock the device by just lifting the phone up to a user’s face compared to phones made by rivals, LG said. Galaxy S8 users must press a power button first before lifting the phone up.

The V30’s organic light-emitting diode display with 18:9 aspect ratio will offer an upgraded Floating Bar and Always-on Display features, according to the tech firm. Its semi-transparent Floating Bar allows quick access to frequently used functions and can be dragged completely off the display when not needed. The Always-on Display also allows a user to control music, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, the camera and flashlight when powered off. 

Its camera mode will be upgraded to give any shutterbug professional quality photography capabilities. With its new Graphy feature, users can choose from a variety of professional shots from the Graphy website, which LG will create together with professional photographers. 

“We will provide both convenience and professionalism by allowing everyone to enjoy V30’s high-performance multimedia functions,” said Cho Jun-ho, president of LG’s mobile communication division.

LG will unveil its flagship smartphone V30 during the electronics show IFA in Germany on Aug. 31. The new device will reportedly be launched on Sept. 15, the same day its local rival Samsung Electronics will be releasing its Galaxy Note 8.

LG V30 expected to be equipped with FM radio

LG Electronics Inc.'s upcoming smartphone, the LG V30, is expected to allow users to enjoy FM radio broadcasting services, industry sources said Sunday.

The South Korean tech giant joined ties with the US NextRadio application, allowing users to listen to FM radio via the V30, the sources said.

There has been a rising call for local tech firms to adopt FM radio on smartphones so users can get critical information during disasters.

LG applied FM radio on the mid-end smartphone, the Q6, released last year and vowed to expand the feature to other models.

Samsung is also expected to allow smartphone users to access FM radio starting next year, the sources added.

5G smartphones likely to emerge in 2019: report

Smartphones that run on the fifth-generation network are predicted to emerge starting from 2019, while current 4G network smartphones are likely to remain mainstream until 2022, according to market researcher Strategy Analytics on Sunday. 

“We predict 5G enabled smartphones will emerge from 2019, but it will start to ramp up volumes from 2021 onwards,” said Yiwen Wu, an analyst at Strategy Analytics, in a report, adding “4G has replaced 3G as the world’s dominating smartphone air-interface in 2015, the trend will maintain by 2022.”

The report, meanwhile, said 2G smartphones will quickly be phased out as chipset makers and device manufacturers shift to the wireless and Long Term Evolution tracks.

Boris Metodiev, another researcher at the institute, forecast that global LTE handset sales would grow 30 percent between 2018 and 2022. 

Among 88 countries he studied, China, the United States and India will be the world’s largest 4G markets, while South Korea and Japan will be the most advanced, Metodiev said. 

“While the 5G network services are expected to be commercialized by 2019 at the earliest, the current 4G infrastructure will continue providing major services for users,” said a communications industry official based in Seoul. 

Korean mobile carriers are working to launch the country’s first 5G mobile services. KT aims to demonstrate its services at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics. SK Telecom has opened a bid to purchase 5G network equipment from global vendors, a major step to start establishing a 5G network.
