Samsung releases Galaxy Note 8 in Southeast Asia, Samsung to release Galaxy Note 8 in 150 countries through Oct.

Samsung Electronics Co. said Friday it released the Galaxy Note 8 phablet in Malaysia and Thailand, tapping deeper into the Southeast Asian market.

The South Korean tech giant, which kicked off official sales of the phablet at home on Thursday, earlier said it plans to release the device in 150 countries around the globe through October.

The Galaxy Note 8 boasts a 6.3-inch display, its signature S Pen stylus and a dual-lens camera setup. With the Infinity Display, the company has almost eliminated side bezels to give the device a simple yet immersive design. 

The phablet is also the first Samsung flagship smartphone to boast two optically stabilized 12-megapixel lenses that will allow users to take crisp photos and videos with both the wide-angle and telephoto lens.  (Yonhap)

In line with efforts to promote the Galaxy Note 8 overseas, the company said it will open a Galaxy Studio in Melbourne next week where users can test the Galaxy Note 8, along with other Samsung wearable devices.

애플, 아이폰X 아이폰8 공개..디자인에 엇갈린 반응?

아이폰8과 아이폰X가 공개됐다. 

애플은 9월 12일(현지시간) 미국 캘리포니아 쿠퍼티노 신사옥 애플파크 스티브잡스 극장에서 신제품인 아이폰X, 아이폰8, 아이폰8+, 애플워치3, 애플TV 등을 공개됐다. 

이들 중 아이폰X는 아이폰 10주년 특별판으로 공개 전부터 가장 큰 관심을 받았다. 아이폰X는 지문 대신 얼굴 인식 시스템을 차용했으며 무선충전을 지원한다.

애플 측은 "앞면 전체가 화면인 아이폰을 만드는 것, 우리가 늘 추구하던 비전이었다"고 아이폰X를 소개했다. 그러나 발매 전부터 우려로 꼽혔던 앞면 OLED 디스플레이 모양은 'M자 탈모'로 불리며 혹평을 받고 있다.

‘10주년 아이폰'인 ‘iPhone X(텐)’을 발표, iPhone 8과 iPhone 8 Plus

애플이 간밤에 ‘애플파크’의 ‘스티브 잡스 시어터’에서 ‘스페셜 이벤트’를 갖고 ‘10주년 아이폰'인 ‘아이폰 X(텐)’을 발표했다. 아이폰8과 아이폰8플러스, 애플워치 시리즈3, 애플TV 4K도 공개했다. 전체 진행을 팀 쿡이 했고, 필 쉴러, 에디 큐, 크레이그 페더리기 등 부사장(SVP)들이 제품 설명을 했다. ‘아이폰 X’이 관전 포인트였다. 애플은 처음으로 OLED를 채택하고 페이스ID를 비롯한 혁신적인 기술을 적용했다. 다만 출시 시점이 너무 늦다. 미국에서도 11월 초가 돼야 ‘아이폰 X’을 살 수 있다.

애플, 아이폰X·아이폰8 공개…한국 1차 출시국에 못들어

애플이 아이폰 10주년 기념 모델인 아이폰X와 아이폰7의 후속작인 아이폰8를 공개했다. 하지만 한국은 1차 출시 국가에 이름을 올리지 못해 소비자가 실제 제품을 손에 쥐려면 시간이 걸릴 전망이다.
애플의 팀 쿡 최고경영자(CEO)는 12일 오전(현지시간) 미국 캘리포니아주 쿠퍼티노에 있는 애플 신사옥 내 스티브 잡스 극장에서 신제품 공개 행사를 진행했다.

아이폰8과 아이폰8 플러스는 미국을 비롯한 1차 출시국에서 22일 출시된다.

예약 주문은 오는 15일부터 받는다. 아이폰X의 출시일은 11월 3일이지만 한국 출시 일정은 나오지 않았다.

한국은 매번 애플의 신제품 1차 출시국에 이름을 올리지 못하고 있다. 이에 따라 일본, 미국 등 해외에서 스마트폰을 구매하는 직구족 중에서 1호 개통자가 나올 전망이다. 옆나라인 일본은 아이폰8의 1차 출시국이다.

아이폰X는 보안을 위한 지문인식시스템 '터치ID'을 빼고 3차원 스캔을 활용한 얼굴인식시스템 '페이스ID'을 채택했다. 5.8인치 유기발광다이오드(OLED) 디스플레이를 탑재했는데 애플은 이를 '슈퍼 레티나 디스플레이'라고 명명했다. 1200만 화소의 듀얼 카메라(광각+망원)로 광학적이미지안정화(OIS) 모듈을 적용했다.

출고가는 64GB 모델이 999달러(112만9000원)이다. 256GB 모델도 내놓을 예정인데 가격은 정해지지 않았다.

아이폰8와 아이폰8 플러스는 OLED 디스플레이가 아닌 LCD 패널을 채용했다. 가격은 각각 699달러(79만원)와 799달러(90만3000원)다.

이번 신제품에 대한 발표 내용은 이미 언론에서 보도된 용과 크게 다른 게 없었다. 지난 8일께 아이폰·아이패드용 운영체제 iOS의 차기 버전인 'iOS 11'이 유출된 게 애플에 치명적이었다. 아이폰X의 구체적인 기능, 스펙에 대한 정보까지 샜다. 애플은 감사팀을 통해 경위 조사에 착수했다고 알려졌다.

"구글, 대만 스마트폰 제조업체 HTC 인수할 듯"

(샌프란시스코=연합뉴스) 김현재 특파원 = 구글이 대만 스마트폰 제조업체 HTC(宏達國際電子)를 인수할 가능성이 큰 것으로 알려졌다.

비즈니스 인사이더는 7일 대만 언론 보도를 인용해 "구글과 HTC가 인수협상의 최종 단계에 들어가 있다"고 보도했다.

그러나 인수 가격이 얼마인지는 알려지지 않았다.

UBS 증권은 "구글의 모기업 알파벳의 든든한 재정 상황을 고려할 때 HTC 인수협상에서 가격이 큰 문제가 되지는 않으리라고 본다"고 말했다.

구글이 HTC를 인수할 경우 모토로라를 매각한 지 3년 만에 다시 강력한 하드웨어 업체로 복귀하게 된다고 비즈니스 인사이더는 전했다.

구글은 지난 2011년 하드웨어 부문 강화를 위해 모토로라를 125억 달러에 인수한 후 3년여간 몇 종류의 스마트폰을 출시했지만 큰 호응을 얻지 못하자 2014년 모토로라 부문을 레노보에 29억 달러에 매각했다.

비즈니스 인사이더는 "구글이 최근 자체 브랜드 프리미엄폰인 픽셀폰의 성공을 위해 투자를 아끼지 않고 있는 상황에서 하드웨어 업체인 HTC까지 인수하게 되면 애플에 큰 도전이 될 수도 있다"고 말했다.

구글은 지난해 전 모토로라 CEO를 지낸 릭 오스텔로를 하드웨어 부문 총괄 책임자로 임명했으며 이후 픽셀폰을 출시했고 인공지능(AI) 홈 스피커인 구글 홈과 데이 드림 뷰 VR 헤드셋을 잇달아 출시했다. 구글은 픽셀폰 제작을 위해 HTC와 파트너십을 체결하기도 했다.

구글과 HTC는 인수협상에 대한 코멘트를 거부했다. 그러나 구글은 매각 협상이 진행중인 사실을 부인하지는 않았다고 비즈니스 인사이더는 전했다.

앞서 블룸버그 통신은 지난달 말 HTC가 스마트폰 판매 부진으로 인해 VR 헤드셋 사업인 바이브를 분사시키거나 스마트폰 사업을 매각하는 방안 등을 검토하고 있다고 보도한 바 있다.

애플 소식에 정통한 KGI 애널리스트 밍치궈는 7일 애플 인사이트에 쓴 보고서에서 "유기발광다이오드(OLED) 아이폰 패널 공급은 애플이 아니라 삼성이 완전히 통제하고 있다"면서 이같이 말했다.

그는 "이 사실은 왜 삼성이 더 높은 협상력을 가졌는지, 그리고 패널 하나의 가격이 120∼130달러(5.5인치 아이폰 LCD 모듈 가격은 45∼55달러)에 달하는지를 설명해 준다"면서 "애플이 제2의 OLED 공급원을 긴급하게 찾아야 할 이유가 여기에 있다"고 말했다.

밍치궈는 애플의 OLED 스크린 장착 아이폰 판매가 올해는 수백만 대가 될 것으로 보이지만, 내년에는 4천500만대에서 5천만 대가 될 것으로 예상했다.

그는 특정 부품의 단일 회사(삼성디스플레이)에 대한 의존은 아이폰 공급 차질을 가져올 우려도 있다고 말했다.

밍치궈는 "올가을에 아이폰 공급이 부족할 것"이라는 전망을 이미 내놓은 바 있다.

애플은 오는 12일 새 아이폰 8과 기존 아이폰 7을 업그레이드한 두 종류의 아이폰을 공개할 것으로 알려졌다. 밍치궈는 " 업그레이드 제품들은 기존 아이폰에 탑재한 LCD 모듈을 사용할 것으로 보이지만, 고객들은 OLED 스크린이 장착된 아이폰 8을 훨씬 선호할 것이 분명하다"고 전망했다.

LG unveils camera, sound-centric V30 smartphone

BERLIN -- Hoping to reaffirm its presence in the global smartphone world, South Korea‘s tech giant LG Electronics chose Berlin to unveil its newest flagship smartphone with enhanced multimedia experience.

On Thursday, the Korean handset manufacturer came up with the newest flagship V30 smartphone focused on quality of entertainment with enhanced camera and audio features to be unveiled to around 700 tech maniacs and media officials from around the world, who are visiting the city to attend the IFA, the biggest tech show in Europe, starting Friday.

In February, LG had announced its premium flagship smartphone G6 ahead of the Mobile World Congress, another major tech show, held in Barcelona, Spain, with the same objective. But, the G6 smartphone has fallen short of handset lovers’ expectations. 

The latest V series model, equipped with Korean-language version of Google Assistant, features the industry’s first F1.6 aperture and Crystal Clear Lens in the dual lens camera, OLED Full Vision display and Hi-Fi Quad digital-to-analog converter (DAC).

Of the new features, the camera stands out the most as the industry’s first attempt to offer smartphone videography. 

V30’s dual camera is powered with an F1.6 camera with a glass lens that lets in more lights to produce brighter and dynamic shots. 

Another newly adopted Cine Video mode allows users to take movie-like videos on the V30 smartphone. 

The Crystal Clear Lens delivers more accurate colors and clearer images than plastic lens that are used in other smartphones.

The second lens in the V30 dual camera is an upgraded 13MP wide angle lens with two-thirds less edge distortion than in V20. 

With a 6-inch 18:9 OLED FullVision display, the V30 is 8 millimeters shorter and 3 millimeters narrower than the predecessor, resulting in a firmer grip. It is 7.3 millimeters thick and weighs 158 grams.

According to the company, the V30 is the lightest among 6-inch smartphones. 

The latest LG smartphone tries to offer users optimal multimedia experience with sound backed by a Hi-Fi Quad DAC and audio tuning by Bang & Olufsen PLAY. 

The V30 is the first global smartphone to support MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) technology that allows for the streaming of high-resolution audio files that capture the sound of the original studio master and folds it into a small file to make high-resolution audio easy to stream. The V30’s recording capability is upgraded as well, with a receiver that doubles as a microphone to capture a broader sound spectrum, from gentle chimes to thunderous drums.

LG also introduced the first smartphone with a Korean language voice recognition service by Google. 

The Google Assistant on the V30 takes advantage of the smartphone’s advanced signal processing enabling users to use the voice command, “Ok Google” even when loud music is being played. 

In addition, LG appliances ranging from washing machine, dryer, refrigerator, air purifier, oven, air conditioner to robot vacuum are compatible with the Google Assistant when using the V30 and Google Home. 

Users can say, “Ok Google, talk to LG to wash my clothes,” to start a load of laundry.

“The V series has always been demonstrating new practical mobile technologies that contribute to high quality content creation and the V30 has not lost sight of its roots,” said Juno Cho, president of the mobile communications at LG. “With its F1.6 Crystal Clear Lens Camera and Cine Video mode, the LG V30 is designed to help create professional-looking content without professional-level complexity.” 

The V30 will be available to consumers in South Korea starting on Sept. 21 and will be followed by key markets in North America, Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. 

The 64-gigabyte V30 will come in four colors: Aurora Black, Cloud Silver, Moroccan Blue and Lavender Violet 2. 

The LG V30+ with 128GB of storage will be available in some limited markets.

Together with the newest V30 smartphones, LG will exhibit its premium lineups of home appliances, including the thinnest, wallpaper-like OLED TV W and SIGNATURE series led by the Knock-on Magic Space refrigerator, targeting European consumers and business partners at the company’s booth at Messe Berlin.

LG Electronics promote AI solutions at IFA

LG Electronics Inc. on Friday said it promoted its latest achievements in the field of artificial intelligence technology at this year's Berlin consumer electronics trade show, introducing its vision to home appliances and smartphones.

The South Korean tech giant said at Internationale Funkausstellung that it plans to apply the AI technology to more products and services, and expand its partnerships with Amazon.com and Google Inc. to expand the ecosystem.

In detail, LG Electronics demonstrated how to activate home appliances, including TVs, refrigerators and washers, through Amazon's AI-based speaker, the Amazon Echo, which is equipped with an assistant program, the Alexa.

The speaker is capable of understanding orders, such as "Alexa, change channel to 2 on TV," or "Alexa, mute TV," LG said. 

The company said it plans to allow Alexa to control seven different types of home appliances in the United States by the end of this year. 

LG Electronics also showcased the Korean-language edition of the Google Assistant through the LG V30 smartphone this week.

The Google Assistant equipped on the LG V30 is capable of understanding orders customized to the device. The company said the assistant can permit users to ask the device to shoot a clip in Cine Video mode, which is designed to shoot "professional" grade video. In this setting the user has the option to adjust various effects and zoom in and out.

The V30 also connects to various home appliances, making it possible to activate appliances using the Google Assistant.

LG Electronics said it will continue its efforts to expand its presence in the AI industry. Earlier this year, the company showcased DeepThinQ, a deep-learning solution which can be applied to home appliances. (Yonhap)

(베를린=연합뉴스) 고현실 기자 = 삼성전자와 애플에 이어 세계 3위의 스마트폰업체인 중국의 화웨이가 세계 최초로 인공지능(AI)용 연산장치가 내장된 고성능 모바일 칩세트 '기린 970'을 공개하며 AI 스마트폰 시대의 새로운 장을 열겠다고 선언했다.

화웨이는 다음달에 이 칩세트가 탑재된 프리미엄폰을 공개한다고 예고했다.

화웨이의 리처드 유 컨슈머비즈니스그룹 최고경영자(CEO)는 2일(현지시간) 독일 베를린에서 열린 유럽 최대 가전 전시회 'IFA 2017'에서 이런 내용을 밝혔다.

기린 970은 전세계 스마트폰용 칩셋 중 최초로 AI에 필요한 신경망 연산 전용 프로세서인 NPU(Neural Network Processing Unit)를 적용했다. NPU는 CPU보다 처리 능력은 25배, 에너지 효율은 50배 뛰어나다는 게 화웨이의 설명이다.

모바일 칩셋에 NPU를 넣는다는 아이디어는 2015년 말 나온 퀄컴의 스냅드래곤 820이 설계될 당시 검토된 적이 있었으나 실현은 되지 않았다.

화웨이의 설명에 따르면 기린 970에 포함된 NPU는 사진 1천장을 인식하는 데 배터리 소모율이 0.19%에 불과하고, 1분 동안 2천장의 이미지를 인식한다.

이는 아이폰과 갤럭시 등 경쟁사 제품의 칩보다 5배 빠른 속도라고 화웨이는 전했다.

NPU를 탑재한 기린 970은 손톱만한 크기에 55억개의 트랜지스터를 갖췄고, TSMC의 10나노미터 공정으로 만들어져 전작 기린 960보다 에너지 효율은 50%, 처리 능력은 20% 향상됐다.

옥타코어 CPU와 12코어 GPU, 듀얼 ISP(Image Signal Processor)를 적용해 반응 시간을 줄였고, 저조도에서도 선명한 촬영이 가능하게 했다.

아울러 세계 최초로 1.2Gbps Cat. 18 모뎀을 적용해 전작(600Mbps)보다 전송 속도를 두 배로 늘렸다. 여기에 최신 네트워크 기술인 4X4 MIMO, 256쾀(QAM), 3밴드 캐리어(CC)를 결합해 4.5G LTE 통신을 지원한다.

화웨이는 기린 970을 내달 16일 독일 뮌헨에서 공개하는 프리미엄폰 메이트10에 탑재할 계획이다.

리처드 유 CEO는 "기린 970는 세계 최초의 스마트폰 AI 컴퓨팅 플랫폼이자 완벽한 '온-디바이스 인공지능 솔루션(On-Device AI Solution)'"이라며 "스마트폰에 AI 컴퓨팅을 도입하면 CPU와 GPU로는 힘들었던 실시간 이미지 처리와 저전력 증강현실, 정확한 언어 인식 등이 가능하다"고 강조했다.

그는 "개방형 AI 생태계 구축을 위해 외부 개발자에도 개발 도구를 제공할 방침"이라며 "앞으로 (기린 970의) AI 컴퓨팅 플랫폼을 이용한 모바일 애플리케이션이 더 많이 나올 것"이라고 기대했다.

화웨이의 AI 서비스는 기기 자체에서 돌아가는 '온 디바이스' 방식과 클라우드 기반 방식이 결합된 방식으로 이뤄진다.

기린 970에는 스마트폰 시장에서 애플과 삼성전자의 아성에 도전하겠다는 화웨이의 야심 찬 목표가 담겼다.

화웨이는 이를 의식한 듯 이날 행사장에서 애플 아이폰7과 삼성 갤럭시S8 등 경쟁작과 직접적인 비교도 주저하지 않았다. 기린 970의 이미지 처리 성능을 강조하며 갤럭시S8로 찍은, 흔들리는 사진과 나란히 비교하기도 했다.

리처드 유 CEO는 여러 차례 '세계 최초' '최고'를 언급하며 자신감을 드러냈다. 행사장 내부는 좌석은 물론 뒷공간까지 관람객들로 빼곡히 들어차 화웨이의 행보에 대한 업계의 관심을 보여줬다.

화웨이의 신작 발표로 AI 시장에서 '차이나 파워'는 한층 확대될 것으로 예상된다.

이미 바이두와 알리바바 등 대표 기업들이 앞다퉈 AI 연구를 확대하고 있고, 중국 국무원은 지난 7월 2030년까지 AI 기술 선도를 목표로 '차세대 인공지능 발전 규획'을 마련해 발표했다.
