지난해까지 10분기 연속 영업손실로 2조원이 넘는 누적 적자를 기록, 벼랑 끝에 선 LG전자 모바일 사업의 향배에 이목이 쏠렸다.
지난 25일 LG전자는 매출액 16조9636억원, 영업이익 3668억원의 지난해 4분기 실적을 발표했다. 생활가전·TV를 맡은 H&A·HE사업본부가 각각 3668억원, 3835억원씩 영업이익을 올렸지만 모바일 사업부 MC사업본부에서 2142억원의 영업손실이 발생하면서 실적 발목을 잡았다.
이로써 MC사업본부는 2015년 3분기 776억원의 영업손실을 기록한 데 이래 10분기 연속 적자를 냈다. 2015년 하반기 1214억원으로 시작된 적자액은 2016년 1조2591억원까지 늘었다가 지난해 7211억원으로 10분기 총 2조1016억원을 기록했다.
LG전자는 지난해 인사에서 MC사업본부장 자리를 전임 조성진 사장에서 황정환 부사장에게 넘겼고 2016년부터 인력 재배치 등 조직 효율화 작업을 강도 높게 진행해 왔다.
또한 조성진 부회장(CEO)가 최근 국제 가전 전시회 ‘CES 2018’에서 기존 스마트폰 마케팅 전략에 “변화가 있을 수 있다”는 발언을 하면서 올해는 LG전자 모바일 사업에 대대적인 변화가 있을 것이라는 전망이 나오고 있다.
◇ ‘옵티머스’부터 ‘V30’까지 고전의 반복
LG전자는 이미 스마트폰 시장에서 수차례 고비를 거치며 제품·마케팅 전략의 수정을 거쳐 왔다.
2000년대 중후반까지 삼성전자와 국내 휴대전화 시장을 양분하고 있던 LG전자는 2005년 매끈한 디자인의 피처폰 ‘초콜릿폰’으로 1000만대 이상의 판매고를 올리며 승승장구 했지만 2007년 해외에서 애플 ‘아이폰’ 출시로 시작된 스마트폰 대중화 바람에 편승하지 못했다.
삼성전자는 2008년 윈도우 OS(운영체제) 기반 ‘옴니아’를 처음 선보이며 스마트폰 경쟁 채비를 시작했지만 LG전자는 2009년 ‘아이폰3’가 국내 시장에 정식 출시될 때까지 손을 놓고 있었다.
특히 삼성전자는 2010년 애플 특유의 디자인과 사용성을 갖춘 아이폰과 경쟁을 위해 첫 안드로이드 스마트폰 ‘갤럭시 S’를 선보였고 현행 ‘갤럭시 S8’까지 프리미엄 브랜드로 명맥을 이어오고 있다.
반면 LG전자는 급히 ‘안드로1’, ‘옵티머스’ 시리즈 등을 내놓으며 안드로이드 진영에 가담했지만 물리적 쿼티 키보드를 고수한 디자인 등으로 시장의 반향을 이끌지 못했다. 아이폰과 갤럭시 시리즈는 키보드를 삭제한 단순한 디자인으로 경쟁하고 있었다.
이에 위기감이 높아진 LG전자는 2012년 ‘옵티머스G’를 새로 선보였고 이는 현행 프리미엄 제품 ‘G’ 시리즈의 전신이 됐다. 하지만 이듬해 ‘G2’까지 경쟁사가 차지한 시장 선두주자의 벽을 넘지 못했고 ‘G3’가 출시된 2014년 2분기에야 겨우 흑자전환에 성공했다.
G3의 선전에 이어 LG전자는 2015년 ‘G4’에서 새로운 시도를 선보인다. 경쟁사들이 단순한 디자인에 견고한 금속 일체형 구조를 차용하는 것과 상반되게 곡면 디자인에 가죽 소재 후면 커버를 적용, 교체형 배터리의 매력을 지키려 했다.
G4의 쉽게 오염되는 가죽 소재와 디자인은 당시 ‘갤럭시 S6’ 판매량의 4분의 1도 따라가지 못하는 결과를 낳았고 지금까지 이어지는 적자 행진의 시작이 됐다. 2015년 하반기에는 새로운 대화면 프리미엄 제품군 ‘V’ 시리즈를 선보이며 ‘투트랙 전략’을 폈지만 실적은 반등하지 않았다.
G4가 실적 부진의 시작이었다면 후속작 ‘G5’는 실적 악화에 결정적 제품이 됐다. 2016년 LG전자는 G6에 금속 소재를 적용하면서도 교체형 배터리를 지킬 수 있도록 전례 없는 ‘모듈형’ 구조를 선보였다.
G5의 모듈 구조는 제품 생산 수율 저하로 이어져 물량이 제대로 공급되지 못하는 사태가 빚어졌다. 하반기 ‘V20’에서는 모듈 구조를 버렸지만 이미 분기 적자액은 4000억원대로 치솟았다.
단순한 대화면 디자인의 V20과 조직 재정비 작업에 힘입어 지난해 1분기 MC사업본부 적자는 2억원까지 줄었다. 이후 ‘G6’와 ‘V30’ 역시 ‘풀비전’ 등 시장 요구에 부합하는 디자인으로 제품 경쟁력을 끌어올렸지만 판매량이 마케팅 비용 증가를 따라가지 못해 적자폭을 키웠다.
◇ 다시 한 번 전략 수정…반전의 시작?
지난해 LG전자는 프리미엄 제품 설계에 변화를 줬을 뿐 아니라 중저가 제품군에 상위 제품 특징을 이어받은 ‘Q’ 시리즈를 추가하는 등 재편 움직임을 보였다.
올해는 조 부회장의 발언에 따라 프리미엄 제품명까지 바뀔 가능성이 점쳐지고 있다. 기존 G와 V의 2개 제품 구성도 전면 재검토 될 수 있다.
특히 스마트폰 화면 대형화 추세에 따라 대화면 제품 V 시리즈를 G 시리즈와 차별화 할 수 있는 위치가 애매한 만큼 제품 포트폴리오 자체에 변화를 줄 가능성도 점쳐진다.
이와 관련해 업계 관계자는 “삼성전자의 대화면 ‘갤럭시 노트’와 달리 스타일러스펜 기능이 없는 V 시리즈는 상대적으로 고유 소비자층이 적다”며 “올해는 LG가 새로운 전략으로 실적 반전을 노릴 수 있다”고 평가했다.
LG전자 관계자는 “실적 턴어라운드(반전)에 시간이 필요하다”며 “지난해 연간 적자폭이 크게 줄었고 최근 소비자들이 제품을 인정해주는 평가 등은 긍정적 신호로 보고 있다”고 설명했다.한편, 조성진 LG전자 부회장은 CES 2018에서 “휴대폰 출시 시기, 특정한 텀을 가지고 언제 되면 뭐가 나오고, 이런 걸 변화시키려고 생각한다”며 “좋은 플랫폼을 오랫동안 끌고 가는 전략이 필요하다”고 밝힌 바 있다.

애플이 아이폰X(텐) 출시 이후 잇따르는 악재로 최악의 위기에 직면했다. 아이폰X 판매가 기대에 못 미칠 뿐만 아니라 전망도 밝지 않다. 일각에선 조기 단종 가능성을 거론하고 있다.
미국 CNBC에 따르면, 시장조사업체 카날리스는 “아이폰X 4분기 판매량은 2900만대 수준으로, 시장 기대치에 못 미쳤다”고 밝혔다. 앞서 IHS마킷은 아이폰X 판매량을 3100만대로 추정했다.
JP모건은 아이폰X 판매량이 1분기 곤두박질칠 것으로 내다봤다. JP모건은 “아이폰X 1분기 판매량이 전 분기보다 50% 줄어들 것”이라고 전망했다.
컨슈머 인텔리전스 리서치 파트너스(CIRP)는 지난해 4분기 미국에서 판매된 전체 아이폰 중 아이폰8·아이폰8플러스·아이폰X 3종이 차지한 비율은 61%로 집계됐다고 밝혔다. 이는 아이폰7·아이폰7플러스 출시(72%)와 비교하면 11%포인트(P) 줄어든 수치다. 아이폰X은 4분기 아이폰 전체 판매 비중 20%에 불과했다.
아이폰X은 국내에서도 고전을 면치 못했다. 이동통신 3사는 지난해 11월 아이폰X이 국내 출시된 이후 두 달 동안 40만대가량 판매한 것으로 추산했다. 일평균 2000~3000대 수준이다. 삼성전자 갤럭시S8이 출시 이후 37일 만에 100만대 개통을 돌파한 것과 대조된다.
최근 불거진 아이폰X 조기 단종설은 부품 협력사 주가를 폭락시키기도 했다. KTB투자증권은 “아이폰X 판매 부진으로 조기 단종설 등 시장에서 우려가 만연해 있다”면서 “1분기 아이폰X 이연 효과에 따른 실적 기대감 낮춰야 할 시점”이라고 진단했다.
스마트폰 전문가는 아이폰X이 최악의 위기에 직면한 이유로 △비싼 가격 △아이폰 게이트 △차기작 출시설 등을 손꼽았다.
CNBC는 “미국 증권가 애널리스트가 애플이 1000달러에 가까운 아이폰X 가격을 발표하면서 침체를 겪고 있는 것으로 보고 있다”고 설명했다.
마크 모스코위츠 바클레이즈증권 애널리스트는 “애플의 노후배터리 교체비용 지원으로 기존 아이폰 이용자가 신제품을 구입하는 대신 배터리 교환을 선택할 것”이라면서 “애플 손실이 102억9000만달러에 달할 것으로 추산된다”고 말했다.
포브스는 아이폰X 조기 단종 이후 차기작에 대한 정보가 나오면서 제품 판매량에 부정 영향을 줬다고 분석했다.
앞서 애플 분석가로 유명한 밍치 궈 연구원은 애플이 유기발광다이오드(OLED) 디스플레이를 탑재한 5.8인치·6.5인치 모델을 선보일 것이라고 예상했다. LCD를 장착하고 페이스ID 기능을 빼면서 가격을 낮춘 6.1인치 버전도 같이 내놓을 것으로 전망했다. 가격은 700달러 수준으로, 기존 아이폰X보다 300달러가량 저렴한 것으로 알려졌다.
Korea‘s top two smartphone manufacturers are set to reveal new models at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month, with industry watchers keeping an eye on rollouts of new innovations in camera and artificial intelligence technology.
As for the core functions of the phones, both companies seem to be focused on keeping the essentials from their previous models rather than completely overhauling their designs for MWC, they said.
Samsung’s head of mobile Koh Dong-jin confirmed at the Las Vegas tradeshow Consumer Electronics Show this month that the Galaxy S9 will be revealed at MWC, although he declined to comment on whether the company will be revealing a highly anticipated foldable phone.
For now, industry rumors put the Galaxy S9 at the same size as the 5.8-inch Galaxy S8 with a minimized bezel and sticking with the Super AMOLED display.

A photo apparently showing specifications of the Galaxy S9 leaked on social aggregator Reddit has put the spotlight on potential upgrades in the flagship phone‘s photography capabilities, with hints the rear camera will have a variable aperture able to switch between f/1.5 and f/2.4.
Some current speculations also claim that Samsung’s new rear camera will be able to shoot at 1,000 frames per second.
After being presented at MWC, the Galaxy S9 is expected to be available for consumer purchases sometime in March.
Meanwhile, LG will be bringing its upgraded V30 phone to MWC rather than its next flagship model, with CEO Jo Seong-jin reportedly having instructed LG‘s smartphone division to review the phone from scratch.
At CES, Jo had strongly hinted that the company’s follow-up to the G6 would be revealed much later than initially anticipated, saying LG will “not launch (new models) just because other rivals do.”
The 2018 version of the LG V30 is expected to retain the high-quality audio and photography capabilities of the previous version, while adding increased artificial intelligence capabilities based on LG‘s partnership with Google.
While LG has momentarily delayed its entry into the flagship battle, it is targeting the mid-range smartphone market with the LG X4+ to be available for consumers at the end of January.
Priced at around 300,000 won ($281), the phone is about a third of usual flagship smartphone release prices. It will be the first mid-range phone from LG to support digital payment system LG Pay, and will offer a 32-bit digital-to-analog converter with 192-kilohertz audio support.
[이데일리 이재운 기자] 애플이 아이폰X 판매 부진에 따라 국내 부품업체에 주문량을 줄인 것으로 파악됐다. 대목을 기대했지만 단기적으로 실적에 부정적인 영향을 줄 것으로 예상된다.
20일 관련 업계에 따르면 애플은 국내·외 협력업체에 ‘주문량을 최대 절반까지 줄이겠다’는 내용을 전달한 것으로 알려졌다.
앞서 외신들은 지난해 말 애플이 아이폰X의 판매 목표를 당초 5000만대에서 3500만대로 하향 조정했다고 보도한 바 있다. 판매량 목표치를 줄이면서 자연스럽게 협력사에도 공급 물량을 절반 가까이 줄이게 된 것으로 보인다.
아이폰X는 초기 출시 당시 최소 999달러(약 106만원)이라는 높은 출시가로 판매 전망에 대한 부정적인 시각이 제기돼왔다. 결국 지난해 연말 성수기에도 판매량이 기대만큼 나오지 않았다. 여기에 아이폰8의 배터리 성능 저하 문제까지 불거지면서 신뢰도에 타격을 받은 점도 역시 부정적인 방향으로 작용했다는 분석도 있다.
국내에서는 삼성디스플레이가 유기발광다이오드(OLED) 패널을, LG이노텍(011070)이 3D 인식에 사용하는 듀얼 카메라 모듈을 각각 공급하고 있다. 삼성디스플레이는 현재 유일하게 안정적으로 소형 OLED를 생산할 수 있는 업체여서 물량을 독점하고 있었다. LG이노텍의 경우 애플의 투자금 지원을 받아 생산라인을 증설하고 사업을 진행 중이다.
업계 관계자는 “단기적으로는 기존 생산 물량 계획을 수정하게 되면서 실적에 좋지 않은 영향을 줄 것”이라고 말했다. 이종욱 삼성증권 연구원도 지난 19일 내놓은 보고서에서 “아이폰X의 조기 생산 중단과 같은 극단적인 이슈도 제기되고 있다”며 올 2분기와 3분기에도 계속 부정적인 영향이 이어질 것으로 내다봤다.
Apple Korea said Wednesday it will open its first full-fledged retail shop in South Korea this month to help customers buy, repair and experience iPhones and other Apple products.
The first shop in South Korea will open on Garosugil in the affluent southern district of Gangnam in Seoul on Jan. 27, Apple said on its website.

The store will open seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Consumers will be able to try out iPhones, Apple Watches, iPads, MacBooks and other Apple products, and visit the Genius Grove for repairs while attending training sessions for the use of Apple gadgets at the store.
Apple said it has been working with mobile carriers, including SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus so users can register and set up their mobile phones at the store.
Apple began replacing iPhone batteries early this month as hundreds of thousands of South Korean iPhone users filed a suit over allegations the tech giant intentionally slowed down older iPhones to push users to buy new models. (Yonhap)
Galaxy S9, Note 9 smartphones are expected to adopt neural network chips that aim to outdo Apple and Huawei
South Korean tech titan Samsung Electronics has nearly completed its development of neural processing units, or “AI chips,” to help boost capabilities of artificial intelligence software for servers and mobile devices, according to sources Wednesday.
“Samsung is almost done with the development of AI chips for servers, which is expected to be commercialized for server firms, according to Samsung insiders,” a source with expertise in AI told The Korea Herald.
“For mobile devices, Samsung has already reached the technological levels of Apple and Huawei, but will come up with better chips for sure in the second half of the year,” the source said.
Samsung belatedly embarked on developing such chips in the second half of last year, as it was hard to buck the trend led by rivals such as Apple and Huawei, which have been boasting that their NPUs feature better AI functions to accelerate data processing on their flagship mobile devices.

When an NPU is implemented in a smartphone in addition to the current central processing unit, graphic processing unit and other chips, the device itself can process, analyze and store data produced on the smartphone without the help of a cloud server. The NPU is widely called the brain of smartphones because its architecture looks like that of a human brain, according to scholars.
The expert said Samsung is likely to show off some of its NPU capabilities possibly through the debut of the upcoming flagship Galaxy S9 smartphone that is expected to be unveiled on Feb. 25 in Barcelona.
“Although the company has been somewhat late in the AI field, it was quite fast in catching up with competitors,” he said.
“Still, it is too early to compare the performances of AI chips by Samsung, Apple and Huawei, because the market has just been formed,” he said. “Apple claims that its NPU has reached 600 in giga operations per second, while Huawei says 4 in tera operations per second. Samsung’s is estimated to be similar or slightly higher at the moment.”
In computing, GOPS and TOPS are measurements of computer performance that count the rate of floating points of calculations.
According to the source, Samsung is particularly dedicated to developing an enhanced NPU for the Galaxy Note 9 smartphone that is scheduled to be launched in September.
Samsung has been ramping up R&D efforts to develop NPUs by collaborating with outside professionals at the country’s top-rate universities.
The tech mogul is working on various AI projects with about 20 professors and nearly 100 researchers at Seoul National University, Pohang University of Science and Technology and Kaist. The company provides about 3 billion won ($2.8 million) for each university a year with a plan for three years, according to academia.
“Samsung seems focused on developing much more efficient and secure chips than existing ones,” said Yoo Hoi-jun, a professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Technology. “By learning a lesson from the latest ‘Intel CPU gate,’ Samsung would develop AI processors whose architectures are more secure.”
A public relations official at Samsung said, “Development of AI chips is underway led by Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology.” The official declined to confirm anything about the progress.
SEOUL, Jan. 3 (Yonhap) -- LG Electronics Inc. said Wednesday that it will showcase a red edition of its flagship V30 smartphone at next week's technology exhibition in the United States.
The South Korean tech giant said it plans to add a "raspberry rose" model to its lineup of V30 smartphones, currently available in blue, silver, black and violet.
The new V30 will hit shelves in South Korea later this month and gradually expand to other countries. It will be showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week.
The LG V30, first released in September, is the company's latest premium smartphone, and boasts a top-notch camera and audio capabilities.
One of the key features of the V30 is the dual-lens rear camera, with one of the lenses adopting the smartphone industry's top aperture of F1.6.
LG Electronics has been seeking to revitalize its ailing handset business by releasing the V30 smartphone in more countries. In the third quarter of 2017, the company posted losses in its smartphone business for the 10th consecutive quarter.
LG Electronics' market share for 2017 is estimated at 3.6 percent in terms of shipments, according to data compiled by industry tracker Strategy Analytics.
